We live in the eon where the internet has become the way of life, the eon where the virtual world seems more real. Starting from a young kid to a senior citizen everyone seems to possess a great deal of technological expertise. Knowing how important it is to move with the times, IRCTC has incorporated the state of the art online booking and reservation facilities like i-ticketing and e-ticketing for the convenience of our patrons.

What is an I-ticket?
An i-ticket is a regular paper ticket booked via the user-friendly IRCTC portal or portals of the IRCTC partners using a Login ID and Password. With the availability of easy payment options like net-banking, debit cards and credit cards, the tickets must be booked four or five days prior to the journey date. Once booked, the ticket is delivered at your doorsteps, via post, and handed over on furnishing documents like a photo ID card, the passport, voter's ID card, ration card, etc. for validation purposes.

The ticket's PNR status can be checked on the portal that the ticket was booked from, e.g. if an i-ticket is booked for Rajdhani express, its PNR mentioned on the ticket can be used to check the reservation status online. I-tickets can only be cancelled from the reservation counter.

What is an e-ticket?
An e-ticket is another, more popular online ticketing option that frequent travelers can avail of via the IRCTC Portal or the partner portals. Working professionals can benefit tremendously from this facility. Registered users can logon to the portal, book the tickets for onward and/or return journeys and have them delivered to the registered email address. When aboard the train they just need to carry a valid photo ID card. An e-ticket can be cancelled online and the money paid will be credited back to the bank account immediately.

I-tickets and E-tickets make good use of technology to make ticketing and travelling painless, easily accessible and less time consuming. The PNR Status can be checked the same way as for the i-ticket.
